![]() ![]() King Ælle comes to resent King Ecbert for his illicit affair with his daughter Judith, who is Ecbert's daughter-in-law. Ælle swears of to avenge Ecbert's betrayal. But after Queen Kwenthrith's death, Ecbert betrays Ælle and becomes King of Mercia. He looks positively disgusted with Princess Kwenthrith for poisoning her own brother right in the middle of a feast in front of everybody.Īlways allied with King Ecbert, the two kings make a pact: to share Mercia between them. He is present with King Ecbert, Ragnar, Lagertha, Rollo, Aethelwulf, and Judith, when Kwenthrith poisons Burgred and becomes Queen of Mercia. He then reluctantly volunteers as a hostage in an exchange with him against Rollo, injured and captured during the battle. In a surprising move, King Ælle agrees to King Ecbert's plan to make peace with the Vikings and employ them as mercenaries in Mercia, despite his oath of vengeance against Ragnar. Ælle swears unremitting vengeance upon the Vikings. His own brother is slain at Ragnar's hand and his armies are broken. King Ælle is consistently unprepared for the fury of the Northern raiders and finds himself outplayed and outfoxed at every turn by Ragnar. Ragnar in a fit of rage then kills Aethelwulf and Ælle pays the ransom. ![]() Ælle springs a trap, but Ragnar and his troops repel the attack. Then, Ragnar demands 2,000 pounds not to attack Ælle's kingdom and to release his brother Aethelwulf, who was recently captured. Ælle executes Wigea, one of his lieutenants, for his failure to suppress Ragnar's raids. Ragnar defeats his men twice and plunders his kingdom. Ælle's hatred toward Ragnar begins with their first encounter. They recall how he left for the Kingdom of Mercia, where he died. As much as I hope he'll get justice it seems unlikely.Ælle and Aethelwulf have another brother, whose name is not mentioned. One way to rebel against your King step dad I guess.Īnother thing, I feel so sorry for Æthelred, but I hope he comes to his senses and uses Alfred's ilegitimacey against him, he could have so easily gotten rid of Judith and Alfred, Judith literally has physical proof of one of her affairs and it was common knowledge she was banging Ecbert. Alfred seems to put very highly a monk who pointed Vikings to a saints gold and was about to go help raid Paris with The Ragnar Lothbrok. I hope Alfred makes a fool of himself in front of Lagertha and Bjorn, asking about how great their old slave was, he looked so stupid at Lindisfarne getting told his dad was an apostate it was almost bearable, how could he think he'd get anything positive out of the Abbott is beyond me. I wish there was an explanation on how he decided this dead apostate monk was ever going to be a better father or leader than Æthelwulf? It felt more like a teen rebellious phase than an actual turning point in his character, because wether or not Æthelwulf was his bio dad or not, he actually put all his feelings aside and raised Alfred as his own, even taking him all the way to Rome! As much as I loved Athelstan he was never going to be a father figure or a person to look up to in terms of battle strategy let alone being a King. ![]() I find so annoying that Alfred so quickly rejected Æthelwulf as a father figure, when he was a little kid he seemed to love Æthelwulf and accept him as his dad, then when meeting him as a young adult he seems to try and distance himself from him towards Athelstan. ![]()
